In case there’s still any confusion about this
I don’t think hitting kids is okay.
I don’t think that you’re OMG A HUGE RACIST if you’re not down with corporal punishment or that ALL PEOPLE OF COLOR HIT THEIR KIDS (I am living evidence of this not being the case).
I just think when we’re talking about how to be a good parent we need to be mindful of a) how deviant forms of parenthood are racialized, b) where the idea of “being a good parent” comes from and how white supremacy works into it, and c) the fact that mainstream culture generally doesn’t trust nonwhite parents, even if they’re doing the same types of things as white parents.
Wooo nuance. Things are complicated and we need to think about them.
