“Not ‘Queer’ as in ‘Radical’ but ‘Lesbian’ as in Fuck You,” is follow up to “Reimagining Queer Community,” a twenty-four hour perzine I made in July, 2011. Since July, I have continued mulling over nuanced, and often controversial, questions regarding my association with the lgbt community at large. “Not ‘Queer’ as in ‘Radical’ but ‘Lesbian’ as in Fuck You” is a perzine that explores my recent decision to use the word “lesbian” as a substitution for “queer.” I also talk about male domination and sex-right in supposedly “sex positive” queer spaces, the perpetuation of misogynistic troupes and devaluation of lesbian identities within “progressive” and “feminist” communities, owning up to & attempting to combat transphobia that has historically emanated from within lesbian spaces, and queer as hierarchical social capital.

FAQ:
Is “Not ‘Queer’ as in ‘Radical’ but ‘Lesbian’ as in Fuck You” simply a zine version of the that “fuck queer, I’m a lesbian” thread?
Definitely not. I started that thread after I began brainstorming for this perzine, not the other way around. “Not ‘Queer’ as in ‘Radical’ but ‘Lesbian’ as in Fuck You” does repeat a couple of the arguments that were made online & the title was inspired by this graphic. With that said, in this perzine I expand in much greater detail upon concepts such as sex right, social capital & the political elements of re-evaluating personal identities. I also share more of my personal experiences & incorporate more feminist theory.
I don’t identify as a lesbian or queer. Should I order this zine?
I think so. The brand of misogyny which influences the perpetration of anti-lesbian tropes is certainly not unique to queer spaces. I also believe that we can all learn how to be better humans / allies by reading about others experiences.
Are you still selling “Reimagining Queer Community?”
Yup! You can order a copy here at the hoaxzine etsy shop.
I can’t afford the going price of this perzine.
Email me (rachelzines at gmail dot com) or message me in the ask & we can try to work something out.

Yessssssss I’m so pumped. (semi-unrelated: Lesbian also has more of a history in some WoC history/community/circles whereas queer doesn’t have the same traction.)

About

Avatar Grew up in MD now living and studying in the Boston area. I like the color purple, arguing, feminism, science, long emotional conversations with people from the internet, mangos, cute animals, and being a 'cranky minority,' among many other things. I have a love/hate relationship with school and the internet, which are two things that take up a lot of my time.
