3dela said: for a lot of people in the lqbtq community, using “queer” is very empowering. at my univ., we voted to rename our lgbtq group the “Queer & Ally Student Assembly” and many of my friends prefer “queer” over terms like “bisexual” or “lesbian”

Of course. That’s what reclaiming is. But that doesn’t make it a politically neutral term that everyone is or should be comfortable with or that everyone should be able to ‘reclaim.’ I guess I am just confused as to how one reclaims something that has never been used against them. (Just to clarify, this comes out of a general frustration on my part of the recent Tumblr discussions about who can use ‘queer.’)

About

Avatar Grew up in MD now living and studying in the Boston area. I like the color purple, arguing, feminism, science, long emotional conversations with people from the internet, mangos, cute animals, and being a 'cranky minority,' among many other things. I have a love/hate relationship with school and the internet, which are two things that take up a lot of my time.
