so you’ve got horribly shallow interpretations of sexual attraction mixed with “EVERY IDENTITY IS VALID!!1” Tumblr SJW culture and…the result is “demisexuality” as a fucking orientation and straight kids calling themselves queer and all kinds of terrible things

I think this sort of thing is reflective of a larger phenomenon with Tumblr SJ where people get street cred for having more oppressed identities they can check off. Which is great on one hand because marginalized folks don’t have as many spaces to speak and be heard in our society, but it also seems like it leads to relatively privileged people making any difference they perceive in themselves into an oppression. It’s easier to do that than actually own your privilege(s).

Mostly I don’t care what people I’ll never meet on the internet call themselves but when it’s straight* people calling themselves ‘queer’ that’s personal. I know queer is the cool thing to be but it’s still a slur and I have a much too complicated history with that word for that shit.

*I make a distinction here between “straight” and “heterosexual” since I know hetero trans* folks who ID as queer.
